Singapore old shophouse is more than a pretty façade — it is a living artifact of the island’s early urban life, blending Chinese, Malay, European, and colonial influences into one of Southeast Asia’s most recognisable architectural forms.

Design layout of the shophouse was originally based on Southern Chinese courtyard, it is a narrow, two‑ to three‑storey building with a shop on the ground floor and living quarters above. The shophouses were dominated Singapore’s streets from the 1840s to the 1960s, long before skyscrapers reshaped the skyline.
