Geometry became highly important in the Islamic and Arabic world as its figures and constructions were permeated with symbolic, cosmological and philosophical significance. Geometric patterns come in a variety of imaginative motives: leaf scrolls, intertwining tendrils, repeating bands, combinations of geometrical shapes and flowing scrolls and interlacing ribbons – all set within circular, rectangular or hexagonal frames.
