Thian Hock Keng Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore built by Hokkien sailors in the early 1840s as a place for them to give thanks for a safe journey. The temple is laid out in traditional Chinese style, as a sequence of courtyards and alters. The deity on the main alter is Ma Zhu Po. The goddess of the seas. The architecture of the temple is perhaps one of the most cosmopolitan of its kind in this region because of the Dutch Delft tiles in the courtyard. English motif tiles at the altar, and Scottish cast iron girdles at the doorway. Interestingly, the temple is built without using a single nail.
