Located in front of the historical Padang and adjacent to the Supreme Court of Singapore, City Hall is an important historical and political icon.
This old and elegant building was constructed in 1929. It is distinguished by the Corinthian colonnade and the huge flight of stairs beneath. It witnessed the surrender of Japan to the British in 1945 and declaration of Singapore’s independence from Britain 14 years later. Once again, Singapore was declared national independence from Malaya here in 1965.
