Shophouses are commonly seen in South East Asia. Singapore old Shophouses were built between 18th to 19th century.

Typically, Shophouse consists of shop on the ground floor with “five foot way” – the covered walkway along the road with Shophouse property line for public pedestrians and which the residential accommodation at upstair. Each house abut each other to form row with regular facade with fire walls between.

In the 20^th century, Singapore attracted an increasing number of visitors due to the growing global tourist industry. Travellers stopped in Singapore on round-the-world cruises and also came on flights that stopped to refuel en route to Australia or other parts of Asia.
